How to Access Modem Settings
Overwhelmingly, today’s modems include built-in wireless networking, and if you have this, you can access your settings page on any device connected to your home network. If you don’t have wireless networking, you will need to use a computer with a wired connection to your network.
Before you open up a web browser to go to your modem’s settings page, you’ll need to have your sign-in information handy. If you haven’t otherwise changed your modem’s login info, it will be the default unless your ISP changed it. In that case, your sign-in info will likely be on your modem or the paperwork from your ISP.
To find your default login information, you will need to search for your modem’s information online. Usually, it’s a combination of “admin” for the username and “password” for the password. Here’s where you can find default passwords for some standard devices:
Default password for Linksys Default password for Cisco Default password for D-Link Default password for Netgear Default password for Belkin
Find your default gateway IP address. This will be your modem’s IP address you can use to access your network’s web management portal to adjust all kinds of settings. If you have a router sitting between the device and modem, the default gateway IP address will be the router’s address, not the modem’s. One way to find the modem’s address if trying various known defaults doesn’t work (e. g. , http://192. 168. 1. 1/), is to plug a computer directly into the modem, bypassing the router, and then searching for the default gateway. Open up any web browser connected to your network, type in the default gateway IP address, and press Enter. It may take a few seconds to load. It will bring you to your modem’s web management portal, where you’ll need to log in. If you haven’t changed your password from the default, change it after you log in for the first time. Every modem will handle its layout slightly differently. Look around for a Settings or Options area. Sometimes modems will give you a choice between ‘Simple’ and ‘Advanced’ settings, where Advanced will usually hold all the most critical settings. Sometimes, logging in will bring you directly to settings. From these pages, you can do various things, from forwarding ports to changing your internet password to everything in between. Knowing how to access your settings page is helpful if you ever experience issues with your internet and want to troubleshoot.
