Captioning has become more of a necessity than one might assume. Not only is it incredibly beneficial to those who have hearing disabilities, but it is also convenient for the casual user who might be scrolling in public or in a private space where they cannot listen to audio.

How to Use TikTok Auto Captions

To use the feature, you should first create your TikTok. After doing so, tap the Captions icon in the top-right corner. If you don’t see this symbol, the feature hasn’t arrived for you yet. We recommend contacting TikTok support and presenting this issue to them. Alternatively, you can check out our guide to the different ways you can add closed captions to your TikTok videos.

After you have selected the captions symbol, TikTok will take a few minutes to analyze the text and display your captions. You can then use the Pencil icon to edit the caption text to fix grammar or voice recognition errors.

Unfortunately, you cannot edit the size or customize the text of auto-captions. One workaround you can perform is to use your phone’s speech-to-text feature to voiceover your TikTok and customize the text to your liking. You can open your keyboard and select the Mic icon to use this feature.

A More Accessible Future

With social media’s ever-expanding grasp over our lives, it’s important to create platforms accessible to all people. For the deaf and hard of hearing, auto-captions are lifesavers. It’s a feature we see now being implemented everywhere, including TikTok. And you now know how to add auto-captions to your own TikTok videos.
