How to Add Fonts to Google Docs

The easiest way to add new fonts to Google Docs is to access the extensive list that is available (but hidden) in the application. You can start in a new document or highlight text in an existing document for which you would like to make a font change. Then follow these steps:

If using a new document, place your cursor where you want it on the page. If changing existing text, highlight what you want to change, then click the Font Picker in the upper toolbar. At the top of the Fonts list, select More fonts. A Fonts dialog box opens. Scroll through the list. Any font that is colored blue and has a checkmark next to it is already in your font list. Any font colored black is not in your list. To add a font to the list, click it. It will turn blue and appear on the right side of the dialog box in the My fonts list. If you want to keep your Fonts list tidy, remove unused fonts from your list. Click the name of a font that’s blue, and it will turn black and be removed from your list. You can always add it back in later if you find you need it. There are hundreds of fonts listed in the Fonts dialog box. To make finding the right one easier you can use the drop down filters for Scripts, Show, and Sort above the Fonts list to sort and navigate all the fonts available. You can also search for a font if you know the font name. When you’ve finished making your selections, click OK to close the Fonts dialog box. The fonts you selected will be available in your font list, either in the Recent section of the list or below that in alphabetical order.

Adding Fonts on Google Docs for Mobile Devices

If you’re working on a document on a mobile device, like an iPhone or Android smartphone, you won’t have the option to access More fonts. Instead, all the fonts are already listed in the font picker, and you’ll have to scroll through them until you find the one you’re looking for.

To add a font to the list, click it. It will turn blue and appear on the right side of the dialog box in the My fonts list.

You can also search for a font if you know the font name.

Open the document you want to change fonts in for editing. If you have any existing document, you’ll need to click the Editing (pencil) icon in the bottom right corner. Highlight the text you want to change and click the Font icon. Select the font you want to use, then click the blue arrow in the upper left corner to accept the change and return to the main document.

Add Fonts Using the Extensis Extension

Although Google Docs font management has changed and it’s no longer necessary for adding fonts to Google Docs, you could also install the Extensis Fonts add-on to make it easier to find and select the fonts you want to use in a document.

In the GSuite Marketplace, find and install the Extensis Fonts Add-on. After the add-on is installed, open or create a document in Google Docs and go to Add-ons > Extensis Fonts > Start. The Extnesis Fonts font manager opens to the right of your document. There you can sort and select the fonts you want to use in your document. To use a font in the Extensis list, you first need to type your text, then select it. Then, choose a font from the Extnesis font manager and your text will be transformed. Once you’ve selected and changed text, you can continue typing in that font until you’re ready to change it again.

Can You Upload Your Own Fonts in Google Docs?

There is no way to upload your own customized fonts into the application. This includes fonts that you have created, as well as fonts created by others. But don’t despair. There are still plenty of font options to choose from, and it’s very likely the font you need or something very similar will be available.
