But what if you need to add musical notations to your doc? You could try to copy and paste each symbol after searching for it online. Fortunately, there are easier methods available.

Use Special Characters

To add musical symbols to your doc, open the Insert menu and click special Characters. Then, using the drop-down menus, select Symbol and Musical.

If your task is more complex, this method is not good enough. A part of the symbols is not visible, and you can’t insert a staff and write notes on it.

An alternative is to use a third-party app for special symbols, or you can use a Google Doc add-on.

Use a Musical Notation Add-on

Flat for Docs is one of the best add-ons for inserting musical symbols. Once you’ve installed it, you can access it by opening the Extensions menu.

This Google Docs add-on provides you with anything you might need to create your musical snippet. You’ll start by selecting one of the five staves available. To change staff notations, simply click on them. You can select clefs, accidentals, and time signatures.

In the Measure tab, you can select time signature, clef, and key signature, amongst other options. To write a note, open the Note tab and select it from the window’s ribbon. Simply click on the staff where you want to write it.

Flat for Docs has plenty of tools for someone passionate about music theory. To add tempo, modulation effect, or dynamics symbols, you have to use the Articulation, Ornament, and Dynamic tabs.

You can use the Copy, Cut, Paste or Undo commands from the Document tab to quickly edit your musical snippet.

Once you’ve completed your masterpiece, you can listen to it by clicking the Play icon at the bottom of the window. You can even add in a metronome to ensure you’re not missing a tempo.

By clicking on the Insert button, Flat for Docs will insert the musical snippet as an image into your doc.

Add Your Musical Creativity to Google Docs

Adding musical notation to your documents can be a challenge. You may find a few online tools for creating music sheets, but you’d have to download them and upload the sheets to your drive. Using Google Docs is a better option since it allows you to share your creations with your music-loving friends.
